Recorder

Sherelyn Harris

Tutor: Sherelyn Harris

I have been playing music since the age of 5, where I learned how to read music and play recorder and play in a small orchestra; then, I moved onto clarinet at the age of 8. Later on, I played saxophone. My life has been spent playing music, starting with school orchestras, and then various small groups.

Further training has come in the form of classical training by June Byng (NZ Symphony Orchestra), some jazz training with Colin Hemgingsen and Lance Philip, and attending “improvisation for non jazz players” at the NZ School of Music, as well as loads of generous mentoring over the years from the various tutors at the School of Music and other musicians.

This training in both classical and jazz has given me the skills and knowledge to be able to play across all genres of music, enabling me to be able to get my students into whatever type of group they would like to join.

Lance Philip and Rodger Fox mentored me and helped me set up and establish the Scots College Jazz Band, which I conducted and directed for 15 years, and I grew immensely in my knowledge and understanding of all instruments and music over this time. I loved every moment of directing the Jazz Band. This has been one of my most cherished music experiences and cemented how much I love to teach music and share this with my students.

Now, teaching is my main focus and my students are currently achieving outstanding results in their Music Grade exams, up to Grade 8 passes. My students are also passing their NCEA Level 3 music exams.

The pure joy and success of my students is what best represents who I am as a music teacher and I am someone who gets enormous pleasure from playing music.

Schedule

My teaching schedule is Tuesday and Wednesday with places available after school on Tuesday. Individual or small group lessons available.
