Classroom and Turf Project
Stage One of Scots College’s Classroom and Turf Project is well underway. The foundations are in, the building's steel frame is almost complete, and the project remains firmly on track for completion in April 2027.
Designed with our students at heart, this project brings new learning spaces and a much-anticipated all-weather turf to our campus, enhancing how we learn, play, and connect as a community.
The College has grown significantly, and this development ensures the facilities required to cater for a roll of 1,200 students. Our aim is not to increase the roll further, but to provide an excellent experience for the staff and students who attend the College.
As Scots continues to grow and evolve, this development represents a thoughtful and future-focussed investment in the quality of our learning environment. It reflects our commitment to providing spaces that support wellbeing, inspire excellence, and ensure students have the room they need to thrive, every day and in all seasons.
What Are We Doing?
Over two stages, the project will deliver:
Stage One (now under construction)
- Five new classrooms to relieve pressure and support flexible learning plus toilets and changing areas.
- A dedicated bus zone, which will improve student safety and College traffic.
Stage Two
- An all-weather turf to keep sport on campus and build community.
- Landscaping, including a memorial garden.
Timeframe
Stage One commenced on site in March 2026 and has moved quickly. Key milestones reached to date:
- Ground beams and foundations poured and completed – early April 2026
- Ground floor concrete slab completed – end of April 2026
- Steel structure erected, main frame in place – early June 2026
- First floor concrete slab poured and completed – end of June 2026
- All remaining structural steelwork in place – end of June 2026
What is Coming Next
With the steel structure complete, work has now turned to timber. Glulam structural beams and rafters are being installed next, with external wall framing to follow. The next major milestone is the completion of the roof, expected in September 2026, after which the building will progress toward full enclosure ahead of summer 2026.
Stage One completion remains on track for April 2027.
Stage Two – the all-weather turf and a new Garden of Honour – is targeted to begin in late 2027, with a planned completion date of April 2028. This timeline is dependent on further fundraising to assist in covering the project costs. The Garden of Honour will be designed to better recognise those who have served the College.
Excellence, Supported by Design
As the College has grown, so too has demand for places; and with it, the need for facilities that match our ambitions. This project is a direct response to that growth. The five new classrooms will provide modern, light-filled spaces built for collaboration, creativity, and focussed learning, while offering greater flexibility in teaching and timetabling and reinforcing our commitment to smaller class sizes. The all-weather turf will add a high-quality outdoor space that the whole school community can use every day, in every season.
Enhancing the Scots College Day-to-Day Experience
These new facilities are designed for everyday use by all students, from Junior to Senior School. They will support a wide range of subjects and learning styles, with spaces that enable smaller classes, mentoring, collaboration, and focussed learning.
By providing much-needed breathing room, the development will ease pressure on existing facilities and contribute to a calmer, more settled daily rhythm, supporting wellbeing and stability for students and staff alike.
The outdoor turf will unlock reliable, all-weather play and sport, offering a high-quality recreation space less affected by Wellington's conditions. It will also reduce the need for students to travel for sports training, saving our community time and money.
Framed by our iconic pōhutukawa trees, it will be a place where students can enjoy lunchtime outdoors, participate in year-round sports, and host fixtures on site.
Support the Project
Stage One has been made possible by a generous $2.7 million gift from the Scots College Foundation. Stage Two – the all-weather turf and Garden of Honour – will follow, and fundraising to support it is ongoing. Every contribution, large or small, brings us closer to a facility our whole community will use every day.
