Safety and Security in Boarding

Security in boarding and parental access to the dormitories and bed areas is being constantly reviewed as we move to two separate houses (boys' and girls').

Our aim is at all times to make Gibb House the safest possible environment for your young person – including of how they interact with each other, their personal security, and the security of their possessions.

All boarders have a digital key on their phone (orange Gallagher app), which gives them access to the areas of the boarding house they are allowed in, at the times they are allowed access.

CCTV

We have CCTV operating in corridors and common spaces and across entrances/exits. These are NOT live feeds and can only be searched when the need occurs. Access is limited to the Director and Assistant Director of Boarding. It is important that when an incident occurs, this is communicated as a matter of urgency.

Locks and Use of Boarding Safe

We expect students to bring padlocks and secure any valuables in their rooms.

There is a safe in the main boarding office for valuables such as passports and large amounts of cash (this should not be kept in bedrooms). We can take no responsibility for items such as these unless they are in our safe. Again, access to the safe is restricted to the Director/Assistant Director of Boarding only.

Visitors (Including Parents) – Child Safety

Other than on the first day of each term, no visitors are allowed in any bedroom/dormitory areas or common rooms (other than the Lower Gibb common room). This includes all family members.

All visitors must come to the main boarding office located in Lower Gibb (the white building set off Strathmore Avenue or down the stairs below the Senior boys’ boarding adjacent to the College). This office is staffed at all times during the working day; on the odd times where no staff are present, visitors are requested to call the duty mobile 027 559 1398. Parents/adult visitors are welcome in the Lower Gibb common room while waiting and, generally, tea and coffee is available there.

Student Out of Bounds Areas within Boarding

No female student is permitted to enter any boys’ boarding wing. This includes common rooms and corridors. There is no exception unless they were accompanied by a Boarding Manager

No male student is permitted to enter the girls’ boarding wing. This includes common rooms and corridors. There is no exception unless they were accompanied by a Boarding Manager.

Co-ed Boarding Facilities

The Lower Gibb Common room is a co-ed facility, where students may mingle provided they have “signed in” in person with the duty staff in the office next door.
