Students Collaborate with Shanghai Peers on Sustainable Development Research
Exploring Global Challenges Through Research
Last term, Year 11 students at Scots College took part in an international collaboration with students from Shanghai Southwest Weiyu Secondary School, exploring issues connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Working in mixed groups across New Zealand and China, students researched and presented on a range of topics related to sustainability, innovation, community development, and wellbeing. The project encouraged students to consider global challenges from different perspectives while building skills in research, communication, and collaboration.
Investigating Real-World Issues
The presentations covered a diverse range of subjects, including sustainable transport, artificial intelligence, environmental responsibility, urban development and the impact of social media on wellbeing. Students examined real-world examples from both countries, drawing comparisons between communities, infrastructure, and approaches to innovation.
Presentation topics included:
- Fixing Our Community Roads: A Comparative Study of Wujiaochang and Newtown
- Chinese Technology Empowers Smart Public Transport: Implications for New Zealand Youth
- Boosting 2030 Tech Innovation: AI and Research Cooperation Between China and New Zealand
- Economic Impacts, Technological Innovation and Community Wellbeing of Major Stadiums: A Comparative Study of Beijing National Stadium and Wellington Sky Stadium
- A Comparative Study of Mountain-Sea Cooperation and Wellington's Urban-Rural Linkage Models
- Sustainable Development Goal: Life Below Water
- A Comparative Study of the Effects of Social Media Use and Lifestyle on Life Satisfaction
Building Global Connections
The collaboration gave students a valuable opportunity to work alongside peers from another country, exchanging ideas across cultures and deepening their understanding of issues affecting communities around the world.
Experiences such as this reflect Scots College's commitment to developing globally minded learners who are prepared to engage confidently in an increasingly connected world. Through international partnerships and authentic learning opportunities, students are encouraged to broaden their perspectives and contribute thoughtfully to the global conversations shaping their future.
