Life in Boarding
No two days are exactly the same when boarding in Gibb House, but every day is built around a balance of learning, wellbeing, friendships, and opportunities
From breakfast with friends to evening prep and weekend activities, boarding provides a structured and supportive environment where students can make the most of life at Scots College.
Starting the Day
The day begins with students getting ready for school and joining their fellow boarders for breakfast in the Chartres Dining Hall.
Living on campus means there is no commute, allowing students to start the day feeling settled and prepared. Boarding staff are on hand to provide support and encouragement, helping students establish positive routines and habits that contribute to their success both in and out of the classroom.
Learning at Scots College
During the school day, boarders participate fully in all aspects of College life.
Whether in the classroom, on the sports field, performing on stage, or taking part in co-curricular activities, boarders enjoy access to the same wide range of opportunities available to all Scots College students.
Being close to teachers, learning spaces, and College facilities makes it easy for boarders to stay engaged and involved.
Boarders enjoy their morning tea and lunch in the Dining Hall, with fresh made meals that support a balanced diet.
Afternoon Activities and Recreation
After classes, many boarders head to sports practices, rehearsals, meetings, or other activities.
Others may use this time to relax with friends, enjoy recreational facilities, or take part in organised boarding activities.
This balance of activity and downtime helps students build friendships, develop new skills, and maintain a healthy routine.
Dinner and Community Time
Mealtimes are an important part of life in Gibb House.
Dinner provides an opportunity for students to come together, catch up with friends, and reflect on the day. It is often one of the times when the strong sense of community within the boarding house is most evident.
Evening Prep
Structured prep time provides students with a dedicated opportunity to complete homework, revise, and prepare for upcoming assessments.
The routine of supervised study encourages strong learning habits, time management, and personal responsibility. Boarding staff work closely with students to support academic progress and help them achieve their goals. Peer tutoring and external private tutoring is available through the boarding house.
Winding Down
After prep, students have time to relax before bed.
Whether catching up with friends, reading, or preparing for the following day, evenings provide an opportunity to unwind within a safe and supportive environment.
Boarding staff remain available throughout the evening, ensuring students feel supported and cared for.
Life Beyond the Weekday
Boarding life extends well beyond the school week.
Weekends may include sporting fixtures, trips around Wellington, outdoor adventures, social activities, cultural experiences, or simply spending time with friends.
These experiences help create lasting memories and contribute to the strong sense of belonging that defines the Gibb House community.
More Than a Place to Stay
Boarding at Scots College is about more than accommodation.
It is about becoming part of a community that encourages students to learn, grow, contribute, and thrive. Through shared experiences, meaningful friendships, and a supportive environment, boarders develop confidence, independence, and a strong sense of connection that often lasts long after they leave Scots College.
