Exploring New Opportunities: Weka Walk Visit to Scots College
Scots College was delighted to welcome a group of Year 7 and 8 students from the Chatham and Pitt Islands during their visit last term to mainland New Zealand as part of the long-standing Weka Walk programme.
Held every two years, the Weka Walk helps students prepare for the transition to secondary school by providing opportunities to experience life beyond the islands. The journey introduces students to new environments, practical life skills, and a wide range of educational and extracurricular opportunities that may help shape their future college experience.
As part of their trip, the students spent a day at Scots College, gaining an insight into what life at a boarding and day school can offer. The visit provided an opportunity to explore different learning experiences, meet students and staff, and experience the College's welcoming community firsthand.
During their time at Scots, the students took part in hands-on sessions in Robotics and Wearable Arts Design. These activities encouraged creativity, problem-solving, and innovation while giving the visitors a taste of some of the specialist learning opportunities available at the College.
Principal of Te One School, Mel Sutton, said the students thoroughly enjoyed their time at Scots.
"The tamariki really enjoyed their sessions and, as always, felt very welcome and at home," she said.
For many of the students, the visit offered a valuable glimpse into what college life might look like in the future, helping them build confidence and broaden their understanding of the opportunities available to them as they prepare for the next stage of their educational journey.
Scots College is proud to support initiatives such as Weka Walk and values the opportunity to connect with students and communities from across Aotearoa New Zealand. We look forward to welcoming future groups from the Chatham and Pitt Islands in the years ahead.
