Term 2 in Music: Performance, Creativity, and Connection
From performing on regional stages to sharing original music with new audiences, Term 2 provided Scots College musicians with memorable opportunities to grow their skills and represent the College.
Strathmore Singers Take the Stage at The Big Sing
One of the highlights of the term was Strathmore Singers' participation in The Big Sing, New Zealand's premier secondary school choral festival. Bringing together students from across the region, the event gave our singers the opportunity to perform and celebrate a shared love of music.
For Year 12 student Amrith, who had only joined the choir a month before the event, the experience was both eye-opening and rewarding.
"Seeing hundreds of students from different schools all gathered for the same reason made me realise how much bigger choir is than just our bi-weekly rehearsals."
Amrith said the welcoming atmosphere helped him feel part of the group from the outset.
"Even though I was one of the newer members of the choir, I felt welcomed straight away and part of something much larger than myself."
A standout moment was the choir's performance of November Rain, accompanied by the Strathmore Band.
"Having the Strathmore Band alongside us made it feel more like a concert than just a choir performance. Ridley's electrifying guitar solo was the real highlight."
Reflecting on the experience, Amrith spoke about the power of music to bring people together.
"Music has a unique ability to connect people in a way that few other things can. It can bring together people from different backgrounds, experiences, and skill levels, and unite them through a shared sound and purpose."
For many students, The Big Sing was an opportunity to perform while experiencing the sense of community that comes from making music together.

Smokefreerockquest Success
Scots College students also achieved success in the Smokefreerockquest, New Zealand's leading live, original music competition for secondary school students.
Congratulations to Groove Generation, featuring Scots College students Ridley, Liam, and Risatisone, alongside a student from Hutt International Boys’ School, who progressed to the Wellington Final and received the Electronic Assist Award.
The achievement reflects the creativity and commitment of the students involved.
Year 9 band Ultraviolet also impressed audiences with an original song during the competition season. The band features Lachlan, William, Roland, and Derek. Their performance showcased confidence and strong musicianship.

Celebrating a Strong Term
Whether singing at The Big Sing or performing original music through Smokefree Rockquest, Scots College musicians embraced opportunities to challenge themselves and share their talents.
Their achievements reflect the strength of the College's music programme and the enthusiasm of students who continue to make the most of every opportunity. We congratulate all students involved and look forward to following their musical journeys throughout the rest of the year.
