Hannah Schickedanz (2020)

Hannah is a self-employed graphic designer and illustrator, working with her husband Thomas to create websites, branding and whatever else is needed for their many and varied clients.
Hannah has created a beautiful mural ‘New Beginnings’ at the College; to reflect the introduction of co-education into the College. After her four week residence, Hannah installed the mural with the help of a handful of students in a foyer on the top of Aitken building. The mural was officially unveiled on the 26th August with a small gathering of guests predominantly from the art community.

Antony Nobilo (2019)

The Artist in Residency programme welcomed its sixth resident, Antony Nobilo, and what a pleasure to be hosting an Old Boy too.
Antony attended Scots College from 1985 to 1998. While at Scots he was Sportsman of the Year and won the House Shield as a Prefect and Head of Uttley House. A keen photographer during his latter years at Scots he was constantly taking photographs and still sees various themes running through his work today.
Since Scots he has built over 20 years of experience as a photographer with time spent in London, Amsterdam and for the past two years he has been based in Sydney. Antony has been fortunate enough to work with a wide range of clients photographing everything from fashion catalogues for in-store posters for Tata India, wedding magazine editorial projects in the Bahamas, Maldives and Portugal, editorial shoots for Gucci in London shot in Westminster Abbey as well as in Paris for Chanel in the Coco Chanel apartment. He has also photographed for New Zealand Women’s Weekly in New York, Venice and London.
Antony visited the College during March, spending two weeks with students in all three schools. Working closely with HOD of Art, Matt Jarry, Antony shares “Matt has excellent photography history knowledge so has guided the students with top-level references from various photography masters. I have been able to offer experiences from a commercial angle which has hopefully offered the students an insight into life as a current professional who has been able to harness new technology from an art and film background.”
During his residency Antony also commissioned a portrait of his Headmaster Mr I McKinnon and wife Mrs J McKinnon which will be hung in the new McKinnon Building once opened.
Upon discovering the impressive College archives collection Antony, alongside Year 12 student Jesse Morgan, undertook a small project photographing the Scots uniform from 1930 using the original College buildings as a backdrop.
Antony has generously donated five prints from his Camera collection to the College to also be hung in the McKinnon Building, adding to the impressive collection of art from the College’s Artist in Residence programme.

Sam Duckor-Jones (2017)

Sculptor, Sam Duckor-Jones joins us as our fifth Artist in Residence thanks to the continued generosity of the Parkin Foundation.
Perhaps best known for his bold sculptures of male figures Sam is passionate about what art can provide for our students saying, “The arts are not just for the arty kids, but for all those who are having a hard time – art is all about not knowing, being surprised, working things out, brushing up against beauty”.
Sam has been working with year 1 and 2 students to build ceramic chains while year 7 students are producing clay masks and year 10 students will be integrating clay as part of their ‘What a Load of Rubbish’ unit.
Already students have been able to observe a range of techniques including the use of a pottery wheel and hand-built clay objects. In coming weeks they will also be able to gain a greater understanding of how firing and a range of different glazes can add to the final product.
As part of his residency Sam is also working with Gibb House students to produce a commission which will become a key feature in the central atrium of the new Gibb House boarding project being built on Strathmore Avenue.
A range of Sam’s work will be on display as part of the year 10 ‘What a Load of Rubbish’ exhibition at the College at 6.00pm on Wednesday 27 August. Parents are warmly invited to attend this exhibition.
Over the five years of the Scots College Artist in Residence programme students have benefited from exposure to a range of artists including: contemporary painter Séraphine Pick, Scots Old Boys and NZ Army artist / sculptor Matt Gauldie, graphic artist Kelcy Taratoa and Seatoun-based oil painter Lynne Sandri. All these artists have made a lasting impact on our students throughout the College.
This year sees the final year of the Parkin Foundation residency – there is no doubt that our students have benefited from this programme immeasurably and we look forward to being able to continue the artist in residence programme in future years under a new sponsor. Our thanks to Chris Parkin for his vision and insight in supporting the Parkin Foundation Artist in Residence Programme.

Lynne Sandri (2016)

Contemporary oil painter Lynne Sandri was our 2016 Museum Art Hotel Artist in Residence
Prep, Middle and Senior students had the opportunity to watch and learn first-hand as Lynne produced a commissioned Centenary artwork Foundation for Life, depicting many of the key elements of Scots College past and present, during her one-month long residency at the College.
The Artist in Residence programme provides a valuable opportunity for students to experience the design process from start to finish. The commissioned artwork that she produces will become part of the College art collection and be displayed at the College. A range of Centenary memorabilia based on the artwork will be available at the August Centenary events.
Lynne’s art is described as being contemporary, bold and tactile. Combined with her focus on time, home and extreme idealism her art tells stories which examine generational difference, culture and identity growing up in New Zealand making her the ideal candidate for the Artist in Residence programme at Scots in our Centenary year.
She has held a number solo shows and participated in many group exhibitions as well as having been very involved in the Affordable art show as an Exhibitor, Board Member and more recently as Selection Team Convenor and Curator. She is also currently Air New Zealand’s guest artist in their Wellington Domestic Koru Lounge.
Lynne experiments with heavily applied oil paint on canvas, wooden rounds and light boxes to reflect that the images of phrases and ways of doing things are cyclical and the notion of what goes around, comes around. To learn more about Lynne’s art and to see samples of her work go to: www.lynnesandri.co.nz
The centenary artwork Foundation for Life now has pride of place in the lobby of headmaster Graeme Yule’s office where it can be enjoyed by students, staff and visitors alike.
We are grateful to the Chris Parkin Foundation for their ongoing support of the Artist in Residence programme here at Scots College.

Matt Gauldie (2015)

We are very proud to announce painter, sculptor, official New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) artist and Old Boy Matt Gauldie [1990] as our 2015 Museum Art Hotel Artist in Residence at Scots College (27th April – 22nd May).
Prep, Middle and Senior students will have the opportunity to watch and learn first-hand from Gauldie during his month-long residency as he produces his own artworks. He will also be teaching art classes and mentoring students while based at the College’s Creative & Performing Arts Centre (CPAC).
Matt’s art has always been his own interpretation of the people he has met and the places he has been. His life and experiences are all sources of inspiration, from Shearers in dusty Maniototo sheds, painting Rawhiri’s descendants at Whiria Pa in the Hokianga, nervous Jockeys preparing to race at Mosgiel’s Wingatui track, orchard workers at Maraekakaho in Hawkes Bay, to New Zealand soldiers on long range missions high in the mountains of Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush. He feels fortunate as an artist to have had the opportunity to investigate and capture these rich experiences in art. He is now looking forward to share these experiences with Prep, Middle and Senior students while being based in the Senior Art Studio, L3 in the Creative and Performing Arts building.
Matt has done over 20 solo shows and many group exhibitions, residencies, and fellowships throughout New Zealand. He has also been the official New Zealand Defence Force Artist for nearly a decade. He has served as a soldier and painter in Afghanistan, East Timor, the Solomon Islands, Antarctica and northern France.
Matt was born in Lower Hutt and is the youngest of three children. He first attended Scots College and then High School in Hawaii, where he started to consider painting as a profession at only 16 years-old. He moved back to New Zealand at age 18 to start his career as an artist. He has recently moved to the Kapiti Coast from Wellington, and has a studio in Shelly Bay.
We are delighted to host Matt at Scots, and welcome all members of our community to meet Matt at a special auction and floor talk event to be held at the Museum Art Hotel following his residency (date to be confirmed shortly).

Kelcy Taratoa (2014)

We are very proud to announce painter Kelcy Taratoa as our 2014 Museum Art Hotel Artist in Residence at Scots College (28 July – 15 August).
Kelcy describes his style as “graphic, hard edged, anamorphic, and hyper-real.” The large-size, bold colours, frequent references to comic books, notions of the hero, television serials and film identify the work of Kelcy, who is described as one of New Zealand’s most exciting young artists, and one to watch. Kelcy is looking forward to interacting with, and inspiring Prep, Middle and Senior students, teaching art classes, and simply talking with students as he works on his own paintings, while based in the Senior Art Studio, L3 in the Creative and Performing Arts building.
He has exhibited throughout New Zealand and his works are included in public and private collections both here and overseas. His paintings incorporate both digital technology and traditional painting techniques. First he extracts and manipulates readymade imagery, in order to then create technicolour, hyper-exposed alternate graphic realities using paint on canvas. His paintings have a strong futuristic, science fiction appearance and quality about them.
Kelcy (Ngai Te Rangi and Ngati Raukawa), is married with three teenage children and recently moved from Palmerston North, where he was a full-time studio-based artist, to Tauranga to take up a full-time teaching position as an Academic Staff Member, for the Bachelor of Creative Industries (B.C.I), School of Design and Humanities, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.

Séraphine Pick (2013)

Séraphine Pick was the Scots College inaugural Artist in Residence.
Wellington based Séraphine is regarded as one of New Zealand’s leading painters, and it is a huge honour to have an artist of her calibre take part in the programme. Serephine already has a relationship with the College; she provided generous support to Scots College through donating an art work in 2011 and lending a new work painted for the opening of the College’s Creative & Performing Arts Centre.
Her biography and related information below is impressive and no doubt both students and staff at the College will benefit greatly from her time here.
About Séraphine
Seraphine was born in Kawakawa, Bay of Islands in 1964. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Canterbury in 1987 and gained a Diploma of Teaching from Christchurch College of Education in 1991. In 1994 she received the Olivia Spencer-Bower Foundation Art Award, followed in 1995 by the Rita Angus Cottage Residency in Wellington. In 1999 Pick was Frances Hodgkins Fellow at the University of Otago, Dunedin. She has received grants from the Arts Council of New Zealand (1995) and its successor Creative New Zealand (1997). From 1997-98 Pick lectured in painting at Elam school of Fine Arts, the University of Auckland. In 2009 Séraphine had a survey exhibition which toured to three major cities within New Zealand.
Séraphine’s work is visionary and historical. She employs fragments of half-remembered dreams and suppressed desires that break through the many layers of paint. Her paintings depict detailed worlds with erotic surrealistic figures and vivid Bosch-like mindscapes.
Jenny Harper, Director of Christchurch Art Gallery describes Seraphine’s work: “Memory, fantasy, imagination, identity. Despite several bold shifts in style and subject matter over the past two decades, these have been the constants in Séraphine Pick’s oeuvre”.
Séraphine has explored a number of subjects and styles in her paintings and the fantasy works are but a small part of her canon.
Séraphine’s works are held in public collections including Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Auckland Art Gallery, Christchurch Art Gallery, Chartwell Collection, Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Manawatu Art Gallery and University of Canterbury.
She is a mother of two boys and lives and works in Wellington.
