Ivan Patterson
HoD Music
BA; BMus (Hons); DipTchg

Ivan was raised in a world of singing, brass playing and bands. He enjoyed early musical success as a trumpeter before diversifying into bands, singing and composition. After completing a degree in composition he worked for a number of years as a theatre composer while getting ready for a major tour by the National Youth Choir to North America.
After the tour and a bit of travel, Ivan trained at Wellington Teachers’ College and soon started work at Newlands College. Following an eight year stint teaching in some of the toughest schools in London, where a specialism in music technology evolved, he returned to New Zealand to be Head of Music at Wairarapa College before returning to his spiritual home, Wellington.
Joanna Calvert
Teacher of Music
ALCM; BMusEd

Joanna started her teaching career in Auckland, before heading off overseas. Spending the last nine years teaching Music in international schools in Singapore, she loved the diversity and range of cultural perspectives her students would bring to the classroom. Highlights included learning about performing arts styles from different countries, arranging and rehearsing them for annual events such as United Nations’ concerts, and taking her students to perform alongside other international schools in the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing.
Now returning to New Zealand, Joanna brings experience connecting PYP, MYP and DP Music across a whole-school programme. With a degree in Music Education, accessibility of making and creating music is at the forefront of her approach. She loves checking out new music tech and it’s creative possibilities in the classroom.
Since being in Wellington, she has been reacclimatising by having outdoor adventures with her two young boys, enjoying a good black coffee and the NZ wine (and of course, great music!).
