Sailing 2009
A large number of boys from Scots have sailed at Evan’s Bay in 2009. Many boys have had a go for the first time on a Friday night and stayed on for the season. Six other High Schools have used the facilities during the season.
Seven boys competed in the Lower North Island Teams racing event in March. Good sailing over 3 days saw the Scots team come third overall. They went onto Christchurch in the April holidays to compete in the New Zealand Secondary School National Teams Racing Championships. The young team of 7 made up of Adam Middleton, James Mclean, James Kane, Mackenzie Taylor, Alex Kane, Stuart Williams and myself were very excited to be competing amongst New Zealand’s finest teams racers.
We started the first round robin off well with a couple of wins but in tricky, blustery and freezing Cantebury conditions we found our selves making silly mistakes which cost us easy race wins. However we managed to hold on and qualify for the gold fleet which automatically placed us in the top half of secondary schools nationally. We finished 12th overall.
Thanks must be given to Mr Greg Wright from the Prep School who gave up his Thursday afternoons to coach the team, to the parents who travelled with us down to Christchurch.
Two 420 sailboats were renewed, thanks to the generosity of a sponsor and Tup Radford.
We thank Seth Price who finished up as coach after two years of service. Matthew Rogers started coaching in term four. Both have given great service to Secondary School sailing in 2009 at Evans Bay.
Scots College is proud to be affiliated with the Tup Radford Intercollegiate Yachting Academy.
