Study in the USA
In recent years Scots College has had a number of students leave New Zealand to continue their study abroad.
Many have chosen to do so as student athletes. Their desire has been to combine University study alongside their chosen sport and the U.S.A. provides the perfect opportunity to do so. With a range of academic institutions from Junior Colleges to Ivy League Universities and a range of sports from track and field to basketball there is an opportunity for nearly everyone.
Some choose to do so as a pathway to professional sport and some purely for the opportunity to complete their university education whilst playing sport to a higher level than possible here in New Zealand. Many of these students apply for scholarships to help make these opportunities possible.
Our most well-known old boy to follow this pathway was Steven Adams. Steven left Scots College at the end of year 13 to pursue his passion for basketball. After completing 1 year at Pittsburgh University he achieved his goal of becoming a professional basketballer entering the NBA Draft and being selected by Oklahoma City Thunder.
Since Steven blazed the way for Scots students we have had a number of others that have gained scholarships to universities in America in a range of sports. Most notably, basketball, football and tennis. Many of these students were successful in obtaining scholarships to highly ranked NCAA Division 1 Universities such as University of Virginia, Pittsburgh, and Drake.
To help assist our students navigate this pathway we have experience within the College through our Careers Advisor, Mr Henley-Smith, Senior Managers, as well as some of our Directors of Sport.
We know that applying for scholarships and securing a place at the right university can be a very time consuming and complicated process to traverse so we are delighted to announce our partnership with Platform Sports Management. Platform have a proven reputation with Scots College families and have not only successfully placed a number of ours students in top universities but have continued to look after these students while they complete their university studies.
The brochure below gives more information about the services Platform offer and interested families can contact Amrit Rai directly to discuss further. Platform works closely with Scots College to ensure students have the best possible chance of achieving their goals.
As part of the ongoing relationship with students from Scots College, Platform will offer 1 scholarship per year to a worthy student.
This will enable the recipient to access all of Platform’s services free of charge for the final two years of their education at Scots College. The process for applying for this scholarship is to complete the online scholarship application form by clicking on the link below.
To be eligible for the 2019 scholarship students must be entering into year 12 or 13 in 2019 and must have completed the online application form by Sunday 30 September. A panel consisting of the Senior School Principal, the Assistant Principal Co-Curricular, and a Platform representative will then assess the applications and decide on the recipient. Parents and student may be required to meet with the panel as part of this process.
