International Baccalaureate (IB)

Scots College offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and the NCEA as a dual pathway to university entrance, both being nationally and internationally recognised.

The IB Diploma is a two-year qualification based on subjects studied in Years 12 and 13. While preparing the students for university studies it aims to give them a broad qualification with an international perspective through the study of six subjects as well as Theory of Knowledge (TOK). Students will also complete a CAS programme (Creativity, Action and Service) and write an Extended Essay (4000 words) in a subject of their own choice.

For the IB Diploma, students choose a subject from each of the six groups; three to be studied at higher level, three at standard level. The subject from group 6 can be replaced by an extra subject from group3 or 4.

IB subjects currently planned for 2012 at Scots College:

  • Group 1: English
  • Group 2: Japanese, French or Spanish
  • Group 3: History, Geography, Economics, Business & Management, Classical Greek and Roman Studies
  • Group 4: Biology, Chemistry, Physics
  • Group 5: Mathematics
  • Group 6: Music and Film

Who can apply?

  • To be successful in the IB Diploma Programme the students will have to be well organised and self motivated.
  • If an NCEA student is interested in doing the IB Diploma, then it will have some impact on his choice of subjects for Year 11. It is advisable that the student …
    • does at least one science, preferably the science he intends to study for the Diploma
    • does at least one humanities subject (i.e. geography, history or economics), preferably the subject he intends to be his Group 3 subject for the Diploma
    • avoids taking more than one non-IB subject (eg: Accounting, Graphics, Tech, P.E.)
    • chooses Spanish for the Group 2 language (which is taught ab initio, from scratch) unless he has some fluency in French or Japanese
