Scots wins '48 Hr Film' prize for Best Damn Teen Team 2011

Ben Lawrence - part of the crew which won Best Damn Teen Team 2011 at the 48 Hour Film Festival

At the 48 Hour Film Festival Wellington Regional final last night, the Scots team 'Kilt & Sporran' picked up the prize for BEST DAMN TEEN TEAM 2011 for their film 'The Last Laugh' - their film was chosen from over 50 entries in that category!

We caught up with team member Ben Lawrence (Year 13), and got the low down on what it takes to make an award-winning film in just 48 Hours…

1. What was the brief? What did your film entry have to include?
We received the brief when two people from each team went to Toi Whakaari Drama School in Newtown, the 48 Hr Film Festival HQ, and were given the requirements for this year's competition. The brief includes the prop, line of dialogue, character and genre that you have to include in your film. We were given the 'Revenge Film' genre, which is one of the twelve genres given out, and we also had to incorporate a 'bent wire', a character named 'Bobby Young' who was an ex-bully, and also the line of dialogue "What have you got?". This is the same for all entrants in the competition.

2. How many students were in each team?
In our team, Kilt and Sporran, we had about 18 cast and crew.

3. Where did you do most of the filming?
We did most of the filming around the school, in places such as the Art room, the Boarding House foyer by Mr Smith's office, and also the grass area by the Tech and Drama room. We also did a good chunk at Adam Middleton's house!

4. What was the most challenging hour of the 48 hours?
The most challenging hour would have to be when we needed to film the party scene. This was because we had quite a lot of shots to film, and also we had a lot of people on set, so at times it got a bit rowdy. We were also pressed for time, as we wanted to be as quick as possible so we didn't disturb Adam's parents for too long…

5. The funniest thing that happened on set?
Adam walking straight into the boom mic haha!

6. What was the weirdest prop used?
A bit of rusted barbed wire Connor had to use at the end of the film.

7. The 48 Hr Film Festival is sponsored by energy drink V - how many cans were consumed over the weekend?
A lot. It's hard to say, but if I had to put a number on it I would say about 50

8. How many hours sleep did you get? and where did you sleep?
We got 3 hours the first night, and 4 the next (which was about 4 hours more than last year!) Our whole team slept in the drama room.

9. One thing you learnt from the experience that you didn’t know before?
Storyboarding is vital, and you can never be too prepared.

10. If you had to use one word to sum up the 48 Hr film experience, what would it be?
Furious
