Sport
We endeavour to involve as many teams and boys as possible in our fixtures with local and other Independent Schools.
Boys from Year 6 to 8 may trial for selection in teams that are involved in inter-school fixtures for cricket, tennis, hockey, rugby and soccer. Boys are selected on merit after trials, observations made in House matches and the basis of our knowledge of a boy’s performance over a period of time, both at school and within the community. New boys are not disadvantaged and we make every effort to observe these boys in the sporting arena when they arrive. Similarly, we continue to observe those boys who do not gain selection in school teams in the first instance and encourage them to improve in their chosen sport.
School teams practise on one or two afternoons a week after school. The team coach will communicate with parents about this.
Visual art and design, music and drama are very important dimensions of our curriculum in the Preparatory School.
We are fortunate to have talented specialist teachers who can offer a wide range of optional activities to develop children’s abilities and passion for the arts. These programmes form part of our extra-curricular activities.
Art and Graphics
The ability to think creatively and laterally is a key success factor in today’s competitive environment. Arts study, in many forms, assists students to develop confidence and freedom of expression in their day to day life.
The Preparatory School encourages pupils to experiment with a range of different mediums, from papier mache to computer graphics. The school has its own specifically designated art studio as well as a computer graphics studio.
The students hold art exhibitions to which parents are invited regularly throughout the year. Artworks of a very high standard are displayed and we often feature in local and national competitions.
Music
Music is able to inspire boys to develop as individuals and realise their potential in many ways. It also assists students’ ability to communicate with others and cope more successfully with other areas of life.
Scots Preparatory School offers a wide range of opportunities for tuition in a variety of instruments, including the pipe band. Nearly half the students in the Preparatory School learn a musical instrument and all boys are given a thorough grounding in the basics of music.
The Preparatory School have a well established choir. They and the orchestra regularly play at school functions.
Drama
Our biennial drama productions include all students from the Preparatory School and some of the boys recall them as one of their most memorable moments at school.
