Year 8 Waitomo Camp

This was a narrative by student Harrison Hitchins

Day 1

Day 1 on camp, we were split into 3 groups, 1 tenting, 1 in the wharenui and 1 group in the tin sleeping hut. It rained all night but luckily our tenting skills were up for the challenge. No one's tent got blown away or leaked dramatically.

This morning, Mr. Rowley put together a great breakfast of cornflakes (porridge) and toast.

Day 2

After breakfast we moved off to do activities for the day. Groups 1-5 went to Super Mini Quest and down stream caving, our groups 6-9 went to the Glowworm Caves and Discovery Centre.

In the afternoon we went to the Ruakuri Caves which I think was the highlight of the day.  It seems so untouched and it’s such a weird sensation being 60m under the ground.

At end the day we had three short walks.  My favourite one was the Rurakuri walk.  I think the most interesting picture for today is the group pulling funny faces during this walk.  You’ll see this and other photos attached.

Day 3

Day three we swapped over yesterday’s activities which meant that groups 6-9 today worked at solving the Super-Delux Mini Quest.  After lunch we went down stream caving.

The Quest involved working as a team and solving problems such as having a rope across the river together with an inner-tube and having to get across without getting wet .

The down stream caving was so amazing it felt like you were in a different world.  You wandered along a water track and then got to the tight squeeze.  This was most people’s favourite thing.  It was such a great feeling squeezing through all those nooks and crannies and finally getting to the other side.  For me it was an amazing feeling and I wasn’t the only one to feel like that.

Very shortly we are going off to dinner and I think overall this was the best camp I’ve ever been on.
