Massey University Enrolment Date Changes

From the desk of Alison Rowland at Massey University

As you will be aware, admission to NZ Universities is changing in a number of respects in response to a rapidly changing policy environment. I thought it would be useful to highlight some key changes to Massey University’s enrolment dates for the remainder of 2010 and 2011. These changes are outlined below.

Please pass this information on to your staff and others in the wider school community for whom it would be of interest.

I would be pleased to assist you with any further information you may require on particular issues for your school or for individual students. Please feel free to email me directly at a.k.rowland@massey.ac.nz Alternatively your Massey University Student Liaison Advisers (see http://www.massey.ac.nz/massey/contact/liaison/) can discuss matters with you or your staff at any time.

Summer School 2010 – 2011 is closed for domestic student applications

Massey University Summer School enrolments had to be closed to all domestic students on Thursday 22 July.

The current closing dates for enrolment into summer school can be viewed here.

Originally summer school enrolment was open until 01 November 2010 “conditional on availability of remaining places.” As at the end of the semester two enrolment period in mid-July, the University has exceeded its TEC funding cap for the 2010 year, and because of continued enrolment pressures domestic student enrolments into summer school have had to be curtailed.

International students may continue to apply for enrolment in summer school offerings until 01 November, since such enrolments are not limited by the domestic student funding cap.

Where special circumstances apply, cases for domestic student summer school enrolment will be considered on their individual merits. Grounds for consideration which are relevant to school leavers include:

  • Essential preparation for 2011 enrolment into a Massey programme
  • Severe financial or personal hardship

Applications for special consideration, preferably supported by the school’s endorsement, can be made by downloading and completing the enrolment forms from http://www.massey.ac.nz/massey/admission/enrolment/forms/ and returning them with an explanation of the special circumstances and the school’s endorsement, to Enrolments for Summer School, Massey University, Private Bag 11222, Palmerston North 4442. Email correspondence relating to summer school applications can be sent to enrolpmg@massey.ac.nz

The University has not yet determined whether summer school will be offered in its usual form in 2011-2012, or if the permitted level of funded places will again require us to constrain summer school in some way. Further information will be provided when the overall funding situation for 2011 has been resolved - normally early in the New Year. The University is aware – and regrets - that short lead times for this type of planning have negative consequences for your school’s ability to advise students and to assist them to make the transition to tertiary study.

Enrolment dates have changed for 2011

New students (both domestic and International) applying to study at Massey University for the first time in 2011 must lodge their applications by 08 December 2010.

Full details of 2011 closing dates are at http://www.massey.ac.nz/massey/admission/enrolment/dates/2011/en/2011_s1...

The revised date brings Massey University into line with most of the other NZ Universities, which should make things simpler for students.

In the past, the closing date for new students was in February, after NCEA results are known. In line with all Universities, Massey receives NCEA results directly from NZQA. Students should therefore not wait, but apply in anticipation of their results.

Late applications for enrolment are less likely to be accepted after the 08 December deadline. Please strongly encourage students to lodge an application before the due date, even if they are uncertain of precise course details or haven’t assembled all the necessary supporting documentation – these can be caught up later. Students who lodge an application but need to withdraw before the commencement of the course will pay an application fee of about $44.00; but this is a relatively minor consideration beside the risk of missing out on a year’s study.

Students should be advised to select a full year’s workload when they first apply, rather than deferring their semester two and summer school course selections until the end of the first semester. In the event that a student needs to adjust their workload or their course selection, it is more likely that there will be opportunities to substitute or delete papers than to add papers later in the year. Students need to take responsibility for observing the deadlines for adjusting their courses during the year (these vary according to a number of factors). Advice on course selection will be available and feedback to students on their academic progress is being strengthened for next year.
