Australian Cricket Tour
On 10 January 2010, 15 young men, a tour manager, coach and player support person met at the Wellington Airport to say goodbye to family and friends, ready for a 12 day tour through Australia.
Planning was complete. Training over the winter period had finished. What lay ahead was the trip of a lifetime for these young men. The team was captained by Year 13 student Nick Wellwood and comprised of both experienced senior players mixed with young talented cricketers. Six 50-over games were played, three in Melbourne and three, plus one 20/20 match, in Adelaide.
Results were varied and the team did their best in the extreme weather conditions; sometimes the temperature reached around 45 degrees. In the end the team won three out of six games. Some of the highlights on the tour were, on the batting front: Nick Wellwood scoring 101 (not out), Hamish Vance 98 against St Peters College from Brisbane and Paul Rataul 98 against Scotch College in Adelaide. In the bowling arena some highlights were: Patrick Fraser 3 wickets for 8 runs, Andrew Benham 3 wickets for 8 runs as well against Hume and Hovell.
Off the pitch a number highlights were encountered, however, the best would have been the opportunity to train at the Melbourne Cricket Ground ( MCG). This was truly an experience the boys will never forget.
