School Life

Scots College takes pride in its focus on the development of the all-round man and has a reputation for providing a consistently high quality extra-curricular programme. All students are encouraged to play sport for the College, and with many codes to choose from, most find a sport they enjoy. In addition, the College offers students the chance to participate in debating, chess, music and drama groups among others. Students are encouraged to try new activities, learn new skills and develop as teams and individuals.

A wide range of subjects is available to Middle School students including French, Spanish and Japanese, art and music, graphics and technology including robotics, as well as core curriculum subjects.

All courses lead to national qualifications and tertiary education.  We offer a dual pathway of NCEA and IB (International Baccalaureate) at the senior level (Years 11-13), and the boys have responded well to the challenges of these qualification requirements.  For example, in 2011, 99% of Scots boys achieved NCEA Level 1, 97% achieved Level 2 and 82% achieved Level 3, with an additional 20 students choosing to sit the IB Diploma instead of NCEA Level 2 & 3, and a 95% pass rate achieved in 2011.

These are well above the average for all New Zealand boys.

In addition to the usual range of classroom and laboratory facilities there is a specialist arts centre, graphics suite, drama suite and music centre. The Scots College Information Centre comprises the Library and the Computer Labs.  As well we provide a Careers Centre, Common Rooms for senior boys and a tiered Lecture Theatre. There is also a gymnasium, further lecture rooms and the newly opened Hodge indoor Sports Centre.
