Future-Focussed Learning

Scots College is committed to ensuring our students are best prepared for successful futures. We equip our students with all the 21st century skills they need for success right up to Years 12, 13, and beyond.

We have a wide range of subjects available, and the emphasis is on developing the transferable skills needed to thrive in the future.

Junior School

Innovative learning approaches in the Junior School foster digital fluency and critical thinking through hands-on engagement. From Year 1, students engage in makerspaces, robotics, problem-solving, and coding to prepare them for their digital futures.

Middle School

The Middle School curriculum evolves to incorporate future-ready skills, including digital literacy and interdisciplinary learning. For example, the Year 9 Interdisciplinary unit integrates English communication skills and Humanities research skills, culminating in a pitch-style presentation addressing the UN Sustainability Goals.

Senior School

Our Year 11 programme is designed to prepare students well for Level 2 NCEA and the IB Diploma Programme by focusing on learning and the development of key transferable skills. It lays the foundation for success in the IB Diploma Programme or NCEA Levels 2 and 3 in Years 12 and 13.

The focus of the Year 11 programme is to develop a depth and breadth of learning that isn’t available in a course based on discrete Achievement Standards. Courses in the programme have New Zealand Curriculum objectives as well as those of the International Baccalaureate as the basis of their design

The Year 11 programme includes a year-long structured collaborative project. Students work in groups to collaborate on finding solutions to a real world problem. This interdisciplinary project builds on vital soft skills, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Our Year 12 and 13 students are able to choose from a wide variety of courses that include not only the more traditional subjects such as English, Maths, Languages (French, Spanish, Chinese, Te Reo Māori), Humanities, and Science, but also includes courses such as Materials Design Technology, Digital Technology, Film and Media Studies, Design and Visual Communication, and more.

A well-developed Future Pathways Programme for Year 7 to 13 students has been built into the tutor periods.
