Changes to MS & SS Metlink School Services

Buses, Trains & Ferries
Monday 3 July 2018

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

There will be significant changes to the public bus service at the start of Term 3. For Scots College students, Term 3 begins on Monday 30th July. However, the changes will begin to take effect from Sunday 15th July. There will also be some changes to rail and ferry services across the region. These also have the potential to impact upon Scots College students.

For students who use the Tranzit buses or shuttles, there will be no changes whatsoever. However, students who use the public bus service will need to familiarize themselves with some new timings, new routes, new stops and modified route numbers. We have been provided with detailed plans by Metlink. Linked here is a Metlink document which provides extensive information about the new public buses for Scots College.

Below is information which we have received from Metlink. You will note that there are also some changes to how students can pay for their journeys. The Snapper Card will become the main way for students to pay for their travel (excluding train services). Students will be able to add credit to their Snapper Cards in the College Shop. The Shop will continue to sell ’10 Trip Tickets’ to those boys who use the train. Students wishing to buy a Metlink Rail Monthly or Metlink Monthly Plus Pass will need to purchase online through the Metlink website or from a railway station.

Please take time in the coming weeks to familiarise yourselves with the changes and to adapt travel plans accordingly. We have endeavoured to work with Metlink to minimise the disruption caused to our existing bus services. However, we have little control over the final routes and plans. We hope that the new service will meet the needs of the vast majority of our students and not cause too many issues for our families.

If you have any questions around how Middle School or Senior School students will be affected, please contact Jason Laverock dpss@scotscollege.school.nz.

The information below is what we have received from Karen Lu at Metlink. She has an oversight over the buses which serve schools across our whole region.

We’re improving our region’s public transport network so that it will take more people to more places, more often.

From Sunday 15 July 2018, we’ve got some big changes to public transport in Wellington, which means from Term 3 2018 there will be changes for school students using Metlink buses and trains in Wellington city and surrounding suburbs.

If your students use public transport to travel to and from school, they need to know about changes to fares and tickets for Metlink trains, buses and harbour ferries from Sunday 15 July 2018, ahead of the start of Term 3.

Our new Metlink lemon and lime buses, including electric double-deckers, are on their way to Wellington city, but not all at once. Please remind your students to check the route number and destination, rather than the colour of the bus, before they get on-board.

Changes to how students pay to get to and from school

From Sunday 15 July 2018, Snapper will be the only card accepted on Metlink public and school buses in the Wellington region. So from the start of Term 3 on 23 July 2018, Snapper will replace all Mana/Newlands cards on Metlink school buses in Wellington city. We want to make this change as easy as possible for you, so we’ll give you a new replacement Snapper card for free and if you want to pay by cash, you still can. /strong>

Paying for travel on Metlink trains

From Sunday 15 July 2018, all school students will receive a 50% discount on the equivalent adult fare.
Tickets and passes for Metlink trains will be zone-based, allowing you to travel anywhere within the zones you pay for.
In Term 3 students can pay for rail travel with Metlink 10-Trip Tickets and two new monthly passes that replace the Metlink Monthly Rail Pass.

The Metlink Rail Monthly Pass allows travel within particular zones. It’s for all regular Metlink rail customers.

The Metlink MonthlyPlus Pass allows travel on trains to and from Wellington Station, plus on any bus within zone 4 and the outer zone specified on the ticket. It’s for all Metlink customers who regularly use train to travel to and from Wellington Station and need to connect to a bus outside zones 1 to 3.

You can buy these passes in July 2018 for use from 1 August 2018 online or from retail outlets. Please note: rail tickets (except for the rail on-board cash ticket for a single trip) will be based on zones rather than stations.

Metlink and Harbour ferries

From Sunday 15 July 2018, we’re making changes to Metlink public buses, trains and harbour ferries in Wellington city. Please refer to www.metlink.org.nz/wellingtoncity  for information about these changes.
