2020 Middle School Scholarship Applications

Applications for internal and external scholarships for students entering Year 7 or Year 9 in 2020 are now open in the categories of:

Year 7:

  • Academic Scholarship:
    The primary consideration in making these awards will be a student’s performance in the College’s scholarship exams on Tuesday 9 April 2019 and after an interview with the Principal of the Middle School. Only those candidates who do exceptionally well in the examinations will be required to attend the interview.
  • Music Scholarship:
    This may be awarded to a student entering Year 7 after an audition with the Music Teacher and an interview with the Principal of the Middle School. Candidates applying for a Music Scholarship must attend the College scholarship exams on Tuesday 9 April 2019. Candidates required for auditions will be selected on results gained in the scholarship exams and from information submitted in the initial application form. The audition and interview will take place in Term 2. Candidates will need to show proficiency in one or more instruments. Successful candidates will be expected to perform at Grade 3 level or better on their principal instrument. They will also be expected to take an active part in performance music at the College.
  • General Excellence Scholarship:
    This may be awarded to a student entering Year 7 who displays all-round excellence in academic, sport and/or cultural fields. Candidates applying for a General Excellence Scholarship must attend the College scholarship exams on Tuesday 9 April 2019. A shortlist of candidates will be selected from results gained in the scholarship exams and from information submitted in the initial application form. These students will be required to attend an interview with the Principal of the Middle School prior to Term 2.

Year 9: 

  • Academic Scholarship:

  • Music Scholarship:
    This may be awarded to a student entering Year 9 after an audition with the Head of Music and an interview with the Principal of the Middle School. Candidates applying for a Music Scholarship must attend the College scholarship exams on Tuesday 9 April 2019. The audition and interview times will be advised by the Head of Music, Scots College. Candidates will need to show proficiency in one or more instruments. Successful candidates will be expected to perform at Grade 5 level or better on their principal instrument. They will also be expected to take an active part in performance music at the College.
  • General Excellence Scholarship:
    This may be awarded to a student entering Year 9 who displays all-round excellence in academic, sport and/or cultural fields. Candidates applying for a General Excellence Scholarship must attend the College scholarship exams on Tuesday 9 April 2019.   • SCOBA (Scots College Old Boys Association):
    This scholarship may be available to a good all round student and our preference is to award it to the son of an Old Boy. All applicants are required to participate in examinations at the College Tuesday 9 April 2020.
  • Boarding:
    This scholarship may be available to suitable applicants.  All applicants are required to participate in examinations at the College Tuesday 9 April 2020

Year 9 0r 10:

  • Pipe Band Scholarship: This may be awarded to a student entering Years 9 or 10 displaying outstanding piping or drumming ability. External applicants who are short-listed will be required to audition. Internal applicants may be required to audition and Scots College Pipe Band staff will be contacted regarding current band members. All short listed applicants will also be required to attend an interview with the Principal of the Middle School. Any successful candidate will be required to maintain a standard of performance appropriate to their age and experience. They will also be required to show the qualities of character and leadership which will reflect credit on Scots College and the Pipe Band in particular. Awardees will be required to prove their continuing development by sitting Royal New Zealand Pipe Bands’ Association College of Piping or Drumming Certificates (elementary to advanced) each year. The scholarship is reviewed annually. In the case of ongoing unsatisfactory performance and/or commitment to the scholarship may be terminated

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

The value of the scholarships is a proportion of the tuition fee for one to three years (depending on year entry level). The tenure of the scholarship is closely monitored, with a review at the end of each academic year. Should a student not be meeting their obligations, the scholarship could be withdrawn. 

The College reserves the right not to award any particular scholarship and/or to reallocate funding to another scholarship.

How does the process work?

  • Applications must be submitted by the due date – Friday 5 April (no late applications will be accepted)
  • Applicants must complete the online application form below – if you are not able to apply using the online application form please contact Sharon Hedges to request a hard copy
  • All applicants are required to participate in examinations at the College Tuesday 9 April 2020
  • Applicants are short-listed and a number will be contacted by Sharon Hedges for an interview
  • Following interviews, offers of scholarships are made
  • Scholarships are reviewed annually and in general students hold these scholarships for their time at the College

Please note:

  • Applications require a copy (scanned or photo) of a school report from within the last 12 months
  • Please provide as much information as possible to support your application
  • Applicants can apply for more than one scholarship
  • Each application requires an application fee of $25. Applicants applying for more than one scholarship only need to pay this fee once. Your scholarship application will not be processed until this payment is received. Details on how to make this payment will be included in your confirmation email once you have completed the online application form below.
  • If you do not receive a confirmation email after completing the below form this may mean your application has not been received. In this case please contact Sharon Hedges to confirm.
