Building Progress Update

September/October 2010

Work has been progressing extremely well at Scots College over the past month. Demolition, excavation and the screw piles are now complete with little disruption to the school or the surrounding neighbours. The construction of the ‘lift’ pit, basement walls and basement slab are continuing on schedule, despite a very wet winter and wet early spring weather.

Retaining walls for the landscaping is underway with back filling due to start during October.

Waterproofing and construction of the lower ground slab and walls will commence shortly, this is where the building will really start to take shape. Observers will be able to see the construction progressing from Monorgan Road.

One of the areas Impact Project Management is very proud of to date is the safety record on the construction site. Contractors assigned to the building development, Field and Hall, have a very strict regime in place and no accidents or incidents have been recorded.

Just prior to the Christchurch earthquake, College management unanimously agreed to seismically upgrade the Chapel Hall Structure to 100% of code, despite not being required to for at least 10 years. This work is very nearly complete, the ground beams are in place and the sub floor foundations braced and the steel columns and portal frames are well underway.

Barry Conroy, from Impact Project Management, having recently returned from investigative reporting for earthquake damage to buildings in Christchurch says, “the earthquake in Christchurch has been devastating for those who live there, but thanks to the current building regulations, we have buildings designed to cope, the Scots College Chapel Hall is an excellent example of structural upgrade work ensuring the building has the best chance of survival in the event of an earthquake in Wellington and all occupants are safe.”
